Alberta and The Rockies

The peaks and falls of the mountains, to the wildflower carpeted meadows and the rushing valley waters, Alberta is Canada’s Rocky Mountain playground, representing everything that is beautiful and pure about the outdoor wilderness.

Backed by the soaring snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies, Alberta boasts some pretty dramatic scenery. From expansive emerald green lakes and sprawling National Parks, to sheer rock walls and vast ice fields, intrepid travellers are definitely in for a treat. Even Alberta’s vibrant towns are surrounded by stunning landscapes, meaning you never feel all that far from nature, even in the midst of city life. Dubbed the Festival City, Edmonton is a great place to check out a whole host of lively night spots and live music venues, whilst over in Calgary you’ll find outdoor rodeos and line-dancing cowboys that look like they’ve stepped straight off the set of a western. Perhaps the highlight of Calgary’s calendar is the 10 day Calgary Stampede. A spectacle not to be missed, this is the largest outdoor rodeo in the world where professional cowboys compete in a spectacle of rodeo events including bull riding, chuckwagon racing and square dancing.

Undoubtedly renowned for the awe inspiring Rockies which form the backbone to this incredible province and the spectacular breath-taking beauty of its Rocky Mountain parks; Banff, Jasper, Kananaskis and Waterton. The gateway to a myriad of outdoor pleasures at every time of year, the snow dusted Rockies offer hiking, skiing, heli-biking, fishing, horse riding, climbing and rafting adventures to name but a few of its popular pursuits.

Beyond the glimmering lakes and towering mountain peaks are a host of other treasures. Alberta boasts five World Heritage Sites, Dinasaur Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Waterton/Glacier National Parks, Banff/Jasper National Parks and Wood Buffalo National Park.

Alberta is all about the great outdoors. Whether that means lacing up those walking boots and unleashing your inner explorer, or staying closer to home comforts and indulging in an outdoor rodeo or open-air concert or enjoying a scenic rail journey aboard VIA Rail or Rocky Mountaineer to experience the fabulous sights and landscapes. No matter how active you’re feeling, you can’t help but be bowled over by the region’s beautiful landscapes.
